Scientists Discovered A New Organ/Gland In Throat Of Human Body

Hi there, Welcome to the page. here's an update.

A new set of salivary glands discovered by the scientists while studying for Prostate cancer.

The Nasopharynx region contains a set of glands which are 1.5 inches (3.9 cm) in length which are lying over a cartilage named "Torus Tubaris". Generally Nasopharynx contains diffuse and microscopic salivary glands but this are larger in size which lubricates and moisten upper part of throat which is just behind nose named "Nasopharynx".

While using a combination of CT Scan and PET-CT for studying prostate cancer scientists of Netherlands Cancer Institute accidentally discovered this finding.

The researchers examined more than 700 patient records which were treated at the "University Medical Center Groningen. They discovered that patient who received more radiation at the location of these "unknown tubarial salivary glands" had more side-effects related to the treatment.

As Radiation therapy is part of the treatment of head and neck cancers and there was no knowledge of tubarial salivary glands these therapies are thought to damage these glands and affect patient's quality of life.

"Our next step is to find out how we can best spare these new glands and in which patients. If we can do this, the patients may experience less side effects, which will benefit their overall quality of life after the treatment" - Study co-author and Netherlands Cancer Institute Radiation Oncologist Wouter Vogel.

This amazing discovery is believed to make a good impact for treatment of head and neck cancers.
